Louder than the wind

hissing sprinklers mix with the ocean's whisper
on a late night in early summer
finishing their work the conversation ends
leaving the waves lonely and muttering to themselves
whispering sounds that are easily devoured
by the monstrous silence
louder than the wind blowing
as immense as the void
which knows not time
shattered to pieces by passing truck
airbrake hiss, far away helicopter or auto horn
only to return and swallow back around
the inky edges
slipping below the water line
sound bound to a cement brick
the hissing sprinklers start up again
white noise taken from the monster
they, the ocean, and a far off rumble
of internal combustion over cement and rebar
harmonize while waiting for a fourth voice
filled by the refrigerators hum

There is a whirring for a moment
then it returns surely as darkness without, silence without sound.
